New Director of Multicultural Affairs Tenielle Buchanan welcomes Vivian Wilhoite (far left), John Seigenthaler, and Joyce Searcy (far right) Hundreds of students, faculty and friends of Lipscomb came by Shamblin for birthday cake and moving stories of courage.
Vivian Wilhoite, Metro Nashville Councilwoman, urged students to step out of their comfort zone to promote equality among all races.
Joyce Searcy, CEO of Bethleham Centers, said Obama's election is an accomplishment built on the many accomplishments of those who came before.
Howard Gentry, Nashville's first African-American vice mayor, said Martin Luther King's dream will never be fulfilled until we have eliminated poverty, homelessness and inquality.
John Seigenthaler, former civil rights negotiation for the U.S. Justice Department, said each panelist at the table represented a little peice of King's dream for the future.

Bellevue Church of Christ is hosting this benefit concert for Cheryl Smith, a standout basketball player for Lipscomb University, former assistant women's basketball coach and a member of the Lipscomb Athletics Hall of Fame. Medical treatment for a brain tumor has left her unemployed and completely wiped out financially. The doctor’s have given her a clean bill of health, but it will take some financial assistance to get her back on her feet.
 
Admission is free, donations will be taken up during the concert.

Inauguration Edition

Join your classmates in Shamblin Theatre to munch on pizza and watch the inauguration of Barack Obama as America's 44th president. Below is a description of the inauguration events from the official Presidential Inauguration Committee Website:
 
The President-elect and Vice President-elect and their families will participate in the traditional inaugural ceremonies and events. Festivities will commence at 11a.m. on the west front of the U.S. Capitol and will include:
 
  • Musical Selections:  The United States Marine Band, followed by The San Francisco Boys Chorus and the San Francisco Girls Chorus
  • Call to Order and Welcoming Remarks: Senator Dianne Feinstein
  • Invocation: Dr. Rick Warren
  • Musical Selection: Aretha Franklin
  • Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will be sworn into office by Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, the Honorable John Paul Stevens
  • Musical Selection: John Williams, composer/arranger with Itzhak Perlman, (violin), Yo-Yo Ma  (cello), Gabriela Montero (piano) and Anthony McGill (clarinet)
  • President-elect Barack H. Obama will take the Oath of Office, using President Lincoln’s Inaugural Bible, administered by the Chief Justice of the United States, the Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr.
